Overview

If you wanted a car that could do anything, literally anything, go anywhere, carry all your friends, family, or comrades, haul a huge amount of kit, then you’d be looking for a Land Rover. And here we have the quintessence of Land Rovering: the Defender 110 Station Wagon. Ten seats, knobbly tyres, acres of roof rack, this 110 has it all. And to top it all off, a previous owner had the foresight to have the original 2.5-litre engine professionally swapped out for a 3.6-litre unit to give it a bit more welly.

So you can go about your day, clambering over a mountain with ten people on board, safe in the knowledge that you’ve got the power to get through anything. This Defender comes with a stack of paperwork, which makes for good reading if you’re interested in oil changes and suspension rebuilds. Items like a set of four new doors, galvanised bits and bobs, as well as plenty of other service items are recorded in abundance.

Of course, this Land Rover isn’t going to win any concourse events, but that’s kind of the point isn’t it? This is a working machine, designed to go places and do things. And it’ll do just that without putting up a fuss.

Interior

  • This Defender retains its original interior and is in very good condition for its age

  • Seating for ten people, including the driver
  • The ‘houndstooth’ cloth upholstery appears to be very well preserved, with few signs of wear
  • Even the driver’s seat upholstery is very well preserved
  • The headlining is a little saggy in places, and would benefit from cleaning
  • The instruments and warning lamps are bold and clear
  • A small piece of plastic is missing from the side of the instrument cluster housing
  • Two front seats have three-point seatbelts
  • Bench seats in the rear
  • Original jack included
  • Heated rear windscreen
  • Sunroof
  • There is a small chip in the front windscreen mentioned as an advisory on the MOT
  • The windscreen wipers were replaced in July 2023

Exterior

  • Generally, the exterior remains in good condition throughout
  • Bright red paintwork, white roof and black trim
  • The paint is well preserved on the whole, but has some age related wear and tear
  • Extensive bodywork refurbishment was carried out in 2012, including fitting four new doors
  • Optional external equipment gives this Defender a purposeful appearance: full length roof rack with rear ladder, snorkel kit, sump guard, and bull bars
  • A full set of five new alloy wheels were fitted in 2018, along with B F Goodrich tyres
  • Spare wheel mounted on the tailgate
  • The tyres all retain good tread, and the alloy wheels appear to be well preserved
  • Individual fold down side steps,
  • Looking underneath, the car appears to be in good condition for its age
  • There are some small areas of corrosion, as you would expect to see on a Land Rover of this vintage
  • Front sump guard fitted to protect the engine when used off road as intended
  • Front window deflectors
  • Wipac crystal headlamps, and LED tail lamps fitted in July 2023
  • Towbar installed (Which remains unused - tested)

Mechanical

  • 3,590 cc six-cylinder VM Motori turbodiesel engine
  • This replaced the original 2.5l engine
  • The vendor informs us that this work was carried out approximately at 25,000 miles
  • There is a stamped plate detailing the engine number and the company which carried out the conversion: Motor & Diesel Engineering, Cambridge
  • The seller informs us that the engine starts easily and sounds great
  • Four-wheel drive with selectable low ratios and locking differentials
  • The engine bay looks clean and tidy, with an appropriate build up of patina for its age
  • Accompanying invoices detail that the clutch hydraulic cylinders were replaced in December 2023
  • In November 2023 the following work was completed: shock absorber bushes replaced, steering box adjusted, rear wheel bearings adjusted, rear drum brakes adjusted, brake pipe replaced, all grease points serviced, and an exhaust leak fixed
  • In July 2023: engine oil and filter changed, air filter cleaned, fuel filter changed, all transmission oils checked and topped up, drivetrain inspected, brakes inspected, handbrake adjusted, steering and suspension inspected, some suspension components were replaced and rebuilt, including fitting a galvanised shock absorber turret

Summary

In all, this looks like a very capable vehicle, as you would expect from a ‘proper’ Land Rover. It does what it says on the tin, it’ll carry anyone and anything you want, and it’ll go anywhere. Add in the engine upgrade, the recent servicing, and the smart-enough appearance, and you get a car which just makes a lot of sense.
